Foster Rabbits Available for Adoption

Listed below are pictures and descriptions of adoptable rabbits currently in HRS Foster Care. All are spayed or neutered and litterbox trained. Please see our adoption guidelines to learn more about adopting from the House Rabbit Society.
 This heart symbol denotes a 'special needs' bunny. These rabbits have health, behavioral, age or physical conditions that require a bit of adjustment on the part of their new home. Please - open your heart to our special needs bunnies and help them live 'happily ever after.'
 This symbol denotes bunnies who are "easy keepers." These bunnies are good for families, easy to care for, and have shown no difficult habits while in foster care.
Not all HRS foster rabbits may be posted here, so let us know what you are looking for.

Forest is a friendly boy who needs a family who will commit to him for his entire lifetime. This handsome boy was left on our doorstep. Literally. We arrived to the bunny store one day to find this bunny boy sitting alone in a small cage, next to our door. Luckily we'd just had an adoption or he would have gone to the shelter. Forest is about 2 years old and has pretty chocolate-brown spots. We took him and got him neutered, which drastically improved his litter box skills. He's an otherwise darling boy who LOVES attention; petting, snuggling, holding and is super playful. If you will be committed to Forest, and not "dump" him after a year or two, please contact us to learn more. This handsome, sweet boy needs a "forever" home. He'll do great with an adult family or one with well-behaved children.

Pretty girl, Alexi, needs a bunny-experienced home that enjoys her active nature. Alexi has been waiting 18 months for a new home. (You can see what she thinks about this situation in the photo above. She's sticking out her tongue to say "this stinks!") This pretty Dutch girl is 2½ years old, active and sweet. She does not do well in a cage, so will require an x-pen setting in her new home. Alexi can be protective of her space but once she knows that you will be gentle and give her some pets (and a papaya treat!) she is willing to let you in her area. She will be fine with an experienced bunny home but might be too confident for children under 12 yrs. Alexi loves her run time and playing with toys, and she's also very good with her litter box. Alexi would likely do well with cats and gentle dogs.

Sweetie is a beautiful bunny girl who is a bit shy but hopeful for her very own family. This pretty girl came to us from the Missouri "Stone County" cruelty case where more than 100 New Zealand White bunnies were abandoned by a breeder. About 14 months old, Sweetie was rescued along with the others and came, with 13 other bunnies, out to California to be cared for by San Diego HRS. Sweetie is definitely shy, but she LOVES to be cuddled and will sit in your lap quietly for some time. She is more comfortable with adults but could be okay with quiet, gentle children who will interact with her on the floor. She loves her fresh greens and dances happily about during her exercise time. If you have a quiet home for Sweetie, please contact us to learn more.

Skyler is a handsome little guy who needs an experienced bunny home. Sklyer has been waiting 18 months for a new home. This little bun boy is a smaller Florida White bunny, about 2 years old. Skyler is housed in an x-pen setup where he kicks out his legs to relax, and enjoys being pet. Skyler loves hay and fresh veggies and running around his pen. He would do best in a rabbit-experienced adult home, but is not a good choice for small children. He would also be a good companion choice for a gentle bunny girl. If you're an experienced bunny home Skyler would benefit from your love. Did we mention that he's perfect with his litter box?

Pretty Melody is looking for a bunny boy to love. This pretty 6 month old girl was one of a litter of 9 babies, and she's missing her siblings. She is hoping to find a home where she can be paired with a sweet bunny boy. Melody is sweet, social and enjoys attention. She has been spayed and is good with her litter box. Melody is best suited to an adult home or one with gentle, well-behaved children. She is used to an x-pen setup and will need that in her new home.

Kiwi is a spunky and talkative girl. Kiwi has been waiting 1 year for a new home. She’s active and a very fun bunny. Kiwi is excellent with her litterbox and loves her fresh greens. Kiwi is not appropriate for a home with young children since she can be a little grumpy when you reach into her space. However, once she knows your intentions, she loves for you to pet her and will let you pet her for as long as you'd like! And you'll want to pet her lots with that super soft Rex fur she has. She may be a good companion option for your neutered boy. Kiwi was born on June 17, 2008 and has been living at an HRS foster home since she was just a few days old. Iris & Rose are adorable Rex girls, totally devoted to each other. Iris & Rose have been waiting 1 year for a new home. These bunny girls are fun to watch as they snuggle with each other, play with their toys and run around their exercise pen. They have great appetites and often run to the front of the pen when you walk in the room, hoping for treats. They are a little shy about being petted and handled, but are very sweet girls and would be fine with gentle children. They were born in June 2008, and excellent with their litterbox. Bridget and Frost are a devoted pair of bunnies hoping for their 'forever' home. Bridget & Frost have been waiting 1 year for a new home. This lovely pair are very devoted to each other. Bridget is about 3 years and Frost is 2 years old. They were given up by a military family and hope to find a more permanent home this time. Bridget (the black/white girl) ADORES her Cottontail Cottage and hangs out in the middle level where she feels secure. Frost likes to explore and is a bit shy at first but warms up to gentle attention. They both love to run and play and are quite active during play time out of their pen. These bunnies are great hay eaters, love their fresh veggies, and are good with their litterbox. They will make nice companions for a family with older children, or an adult home. Bridget & Frost would do best with an x-pen setting or a home where they can have their own "bunny room." They are a bit larger and need room to stretch out. Can you give Bridget & Frost their "forever" home?

Dylan is ready and waiting for his new family. Dylan is a smaller Standard-mix neutered male. He came into the shelter with his 3 siblings, back in June of 2009. His littermates were adopted but he was more shy and languished at the shelter. The shelter was too stressful for Dylan so he was taken into foster care, where he has recovered and is ready to find his forever home. After being in the shelter such a long time, he really enjoys his exercise time and he has really come out of his shell. Dylan would do best in an adult home or one with gentle children. He might also make a good companion choice to your sweet bunny girl.

Pretty girl, Marshmallow, is hoping for a wonderful new home! Marshmallow has been waiting 1 year for a new home. This pretty girl has the most gorgeous blue eyes! She is sweet and LOVES to be pet! Marshmallow came to HRS with a slight "head tilt." It was probably from an ear infection, and it cleared up but she still has a very slight tilt remaining. It gives her a "quizzical" look and she runs in circles sometimes when she gets excited. Marshmallow is super active, friendly, and loves her fresh veggies and hay. She's good with her litter box but sometimes will spread a bit of hay around. She's a 'busy' girl who likes things to do. We think she will do great with a family who treats her gently and gives her a lot of attention. She also needs an x-pen so she can come and go on her own. She is not comfortable jumping up and down from things, or being picked up, as she loses her balance a bit and becomes frightened. Marshmallow is about 18 months old. A darling, pretty girl.

If you're NOT into "extreme cuteness," then DON'T adopt these bunnies! Nathan and his companion Suzie Q, are two of the funniest, most active and just darned CUTE bunnies we've ever fostered for adoption. We don't understand why they are still waiting for their 'forever home.' Nathan is a "tripod" bunny because he is missing his left rear leg. And, Suzie has NO WHISKERS! Yup, no whiskers. Oh well... Neither issue makes any difference to these two cuties. They enjoy life to the fullest. They love to run, play, dig, and chew on their cardboard boxes and grass balls. They especially love their "Ton of Fun Bun Run" tunnel! Because of Nathan's missing leg, they must be housed on the floor with a rug or carpet. They have an x-pen setting in their foster home and this is what they will require with their adoptive family. A cage will not work for them. Nathan & Suzie are best suited to a home where they will get a lot of attention and several hours of "out of pen" time each day. Note: Nathan is afraid of dogs so he and Suzie are best suited to a home without a dog.

Pretty girl, Angelina, needs a home where she will get plenty of hands-on care. This pretty Angora girl is about 1 year old and sweet as can be. She's a gentle girl who will make a wonderful family companion and maybe a good friend to your bunny boy. We've marked Angelina as "special needs" because her new family must be sure to comb out her fur several times each week to prevent matting. Poor Angelina's fur became very matted at the shelter so we had to cut it off. She came into the shelter that way too, so it's clear that she needs a devoted human who will follow-through on her care and get her combed out regularly. If you can't do it yourself, then you'll need to send her to one of our experienced volunteers who provides this service at their home. Once Angelina's fur grows out she will look more like the photo to the right.  She is a beautiful girl.
Angelina is great with her litter box and loves her fresh hay and greens. She will need a nice x-pen house in her new home. She is a playful girl who enjoys attention and love from her human friends.

Little Brady is a gentle boy who loves attention, This pretty boy is about 8 months old and hoping for a new home where he will get a lot of attention. He's friendly, sweet, and good with his litter box. Brady enjoys his playtime and likes to play in the Cottontail Cottage or chew on a cardboard box. He's active, fun, and will bring a lot of joy to your family. Brady may also make a good choice as a companion to your sweet bunny girl. He'll do best in an adult home or one with gentle children.

Pouf is an active, friendly girl who loves to jump and run and play. This pretty girls needs an active family that can appreciate her spunky attitude. She's not a good choice for a new bunny family but should do well in an adult home or one with older, bunny experienced children. Pouf loves to be pet but hates to be held, so she'll need a housing setup where she can come and go on her own. The x-pen housing that we prefer is perfect for this. She also loves to play in the Cottontail Cottage. She's a chewer and enjoys having a cardboard box in her living area that she can "redecorate." Pouf is about 9 months old, spayed, and quite good with her litter box.

Blossom and Berry are a devoted pair of bunny girls. Blossom & Berry have been waiting 18 months for a new home. They are adorable together and really depend on each other for companionship. Blossom, on the left, is a standard/Dutch mix with Harlequin coloring, while Berry is a Dutch/Dwarf mix. Blossom has beautiful light blue eyes, and Berry's eyes are "half and half" - half brown and half blue. Very unusual! Both girls are good with their litter box and enjoy fresh veggies and lots of good grass hay. They would do best in an adult home, or one with older children (over 10) who have bunny experience. They should be fine with kitties or gentle dogs. They will need an x-pen setting rather than a cage, as Berry can be a bit "protective" of her space and does not do as well in a cage. Berry also has been known to nip at small children who get too excitable, so she really needs a home with older children or those who are bunny-experienced.

Handsome boy, Aspen, is one of our all-time sweetest bunny boys! Aspen has been waiting 8 months for a new home. This handsome big NZW bunny came to HRS from the "Stone County" cruelty case in Missouri. Contrary to what you might expect, Aspen loves people. He is shy and a bit scared in new situations, but he ADORES being petted, snuggled, and given nose kisses. He's also very playful and loves to carry his bell toy in his mouth and dance around his pen. This big boy will need an x-pen setup to have enough room in his new home. Aspen is best suited to a quiet adult home or one with gentle, well-behaved children.

BB and Freckles are brother & sister, looking for their forever home. These youngsters are about 6 months old and siblings from a litter of nine babies. These two adore each other and must be adopted together. BB & Freckles are easygoing, active kids who will do well with a family with children. They enjoy petting and playing, and don't mind being held but will let you know when they've had enough. They need an x-pen housing setup, same as the one they have in their foster home. Youngsters their age are more active and will need plenty of play time (out of their living area), plus toys and boxes to toss & chew. If you'd like a younger pair of bunnies, these two will be a lot of fun for your family.

Dude is ready for a new family of his very own! Dude has been waiting 8 months for a new home. This handsome guy came to us from Missouri HRS as part of their big rescue last year. Like the other bunnies from this group, he is sweet, a bit shy, but outgoing once he gets used to you. Dude is easy to handle and would make a good family bunny. He loves his toys and will need an x-pen setup in his new home, which is what he has now in foster care. He'll be best with an adult family or one with gentle children.

Brandon is a darling little guy who wants to find a new best friend. Could it be you? Brandon is a Dutch-mix boy about 1 year old. He's sweet and friendly, and great with his litter box. He seems to like other rabbits and might be a good companion choice for your bunny girl.

Billy is a handsome youngster about 8 months old, who will make a wonderful family companion. Billy is confident, friendly and playful. He loves to get pets but he's not crazy about being held. Of course, that's normal for rabbits. They are prey animals and sometimes it's scary to be picked up and held like a predator has caught you. Billy is good with his litter box and loves to play in the Cottontail Cottage. He would like to have an x-pen setting in his new home, where he'll have room to play and run around when his humans are not home to let him out. He might also make a good companion to a sweet bunny girl.

Peppermint Patti is a sweet little girl; she would make a great family companion or a friend to your bunny boy. This sweet bunny girl is gentle, friendly, and loves to receive pets. She's a bit shy at first but warms up to you quickly. Patti loves to play with toys and chew on cardboard boxes. She's active at playtime and enjoys going up and down in the Cottontail Cottage. She would do best in a family with gentle, older children or an adult home.

Haley is a 2 year old bunny girl who needs a rabbit-experienced home. This pretty girl came from a local shelter where she became very cage aggressive. She was there a long time and the barking dogs made her very nervous. Haley is now in foster care and settling down. She's learning to love the special attention from her human friends and getting good with her litter box. She is doing better by living in an x-pen setup where no one reaches into the the door to grab her. If you'd like to learn more about Haley, send us a note. She might be a good choice for a bunny boy and would settle down from being bonded to a bunny friend.
Update Dec 09: Haley has settled down quite and bit and now enjoys interacting with her foster parents. She loves to be pet and will come to you and put her head under your hand to beg for petting. She is best suited to an adult home that is a rabbit-experienced, but has really come a long way from her situation in the shelter. Her foster homes believes she would be best as a single bunny for now, where she can get all the attention.

Harmony & Trinidad are a sweet bunny pair hoping for their own family. These 6 month-old cuties are a sister-brother pair who came as part of a littler of 9 babies. They are paired off now and very happy together. They are active bunnies who enjoy run time and playing in their Cottontail cottage. They will need an x-pen setup in their home, similar to the one they have now. They are friendly but don't like being held. Harmony & Trinidad would do best in a family with children over 6 who don't try to hold them all the time

Aengus & Connor are two cuties you will really want to meet! These two handsome brothers are 4 years old and two of the sweetest bunnies we've ever met. They are gentle and kind, while being playful and active. Aengus was named for being the "biggest" boy in his litter. He was twice as big as all the other babies when they were born. Connor is the little warrior, who protects his brother and is the brave one of the two. These boys are great with their litter box and love playing with their toys, especially the Timothy Bungalow we caught Connor hiding in. Aengus and Connor would do best in an adult home or one with older children who are committed to giving these boys the attention they need and the "forever" home they deserve.

Robin is a darling Lion head boy who needs a gentle family. This little guy came to HRS when he hurt his back at the vet. He needed time to recover his injury (it was fairly minor) and get back to his normal activity levels. After two months of cage rest he's zooming around and acting his age - teenager! Little Robin is about 8 months old and very social and entertaining. He can be a bit grumpy in his cage but when he's out he's easy to handle and enjoys interacting during his play time. He's litter box trained and loves his yummy hay. Robin will need a home without small children, to reduce the chance for him being "dropped" and reinjuring his back. He's okay with cats in the home but may not be comfortable around dogs. He can be adopted as a single, or as a companion to your sweet bunny girl.

LOVE RABBITS? WANT TO HELP THEM FIND NEW HOMES?
San Diego HRS works with local shelters and humane societies to help them find homes for their adoptable rabbits. We need more volunteers who can help in shelters; even a few hours a week makes a great difference for the rabbits. Weekday volunteers are our greatest need at this time, with the Central and South "county" shelters having the greatest need. You must be at least 18 years old and go through the shelter's orientation program to begin volunteering. The bunnies will thank you!
Because we take rabbits from shelters we are always full and need more foster homes. If you're interested in fostering an adoptable HRS bunny, please email hrs@sandiegorabbits.org for more information this type of volunteer commitment.
