Keeping Rabbits Cool
Rabbit are at risk for heat stroke, and death, when temperatures go above 80 degrees fahrenheit. Here are tips for keeping bunny cool in hot weather:
- Put ice cubes in their water, and give them a cold snack, like refrigerated greens.
- Make frozen herb cubes by putting cilantro or other veggies/herbs in ice tray before freezing.
- Put a frozen water bottle on the edge of a ceramic tile. The tiles stay cool for quite awhile.
- Ceramic tiles or marble are much cooler than other types of flooring. A square or two would be a good place for bunny to rest.
- Mist your rabbits' ears and fur with water.
- Drape wet towel over rabbit's cage with fan blowing on it (make sure fan cord is covered!)
- If you don't have air conditioning, a swamp cooler can lower the temperature in a small area by about 10 degrees.
- Make a rabbit air-conditioner: http://www.3bunnies.org/bunnyAC.htm
